Kyle Troutman: In no way emptyhanded

Last weekend, I made the trek to Osage Beach for the annual Missouri Press Association Convention, stomach in knots with every turn that I would leave emptyhanded. In a sense, I did, as this was the first year in the last eight — my entire eligible career in Missouri — that neither the Monett Times nor Cassville Democrat won a Gold Cup.

Going deep

Nearly halfway through the season, the Pierce City football team is benefitting from something not all Class 1 schools can boast — depth. Brad Hocker, Pierce City coach, said the injury bug is nibbling at his team this season, but young players are filling in vacant roles well.

The Monett boys and girls cross country teams ran in the Riann Lubinski Invitational in Nixa on Tuesday. For the boys, Julio Cruz again produced a top performance, taking second in the race in 16:40.93.

Cubs look to chill hot Indians

Last Friday’s game still wasn’t one for the win column, but week by week, the improvements are building for the Monett football team. Ethan Lewis, Monett football coach, said in the 34-24 loss to Marshfield, there was hard evidence the Cubs are getting more lethal.

Cox Monett Hospital Auxiliary’s annual mum sale is slated for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. until sold out. Mums will be sold at two locations this year including Cox Monett Hospital, 1000 E. Hwy. 60 and First State Bank, 106 E. Cleveland Ave. in Monett. The sale will feature a variety of colors. Cost per mum is $15 each. Proceeds will benefit the Auxiliary’s fund to purchase new equipment for the hospital. For additional information, please call 417-354-1404.
