• Sept. 9 marked the 10th anniversary of the Corner Pharmacy in Monett. Owner Milt Reynaud graduated from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1924. He and his brother, Walter, brought the drug store from the H.E. Carter estate. He said 1932 was the toughest year.

It’s rare for a Barry County school to make national and international headlines, but for the last two weeks, Cassville has made the rounds. From the Springfield paper to CNN and KY3 to the Guardian in the United Kingdom, the coverage of the district’s re-instatement of its corporal punishment policy was just as disappointing as the policy change itself.

Members of the Pierce City Masonic Lodge recently made a donation to the Pierce City School District’s Kids First Program. Funds were generated through a series of fundraisers and given a 300 percent match from the Grand Lodge of Missouri.

The Cassville school district’s revival of corporal punishment by paddle has sparked international reaction, but corporal punishment in Missouri — especially in Barry County and southern Lawrence County — is more often authorized than prohibited. In the eight local districts covered by CherryRoad Media newspapers, five, now including Cassville, have policies that allow for corporal punishment.

A long-time face in the field of Lawrence County law enforcement has died. Robert George, 71, former Lawrence County Prosecuting Attorney and 39th Circuit Associate Judge, died in the early morning hours Aug.

Verona city leaders are applauding the Environmental Protection Agency following an inspection of the BCP Ingredients in early July. City Mayor Joseph Heck said the inspection and resulting 16 violations are a “step in the right direction” for Verona residents who have repeatedly raised concerns about the facility’s emission of ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen.

Evelyn Jean Davenport, age 83, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2022, at her home. She was born Feb. 16, 1939, in Lancaster, Calif., the daughter of Ed and Ora (Wilmeth) Truman. Memorial donations may be made payable to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or the Breast Cancer Foundation, in care of the funeral home.
