Don’t get scammed

Year after year working at newspapers, I see warnings from law enforcement regarding phone scams designed to take money for some of the community’s most at-risk members. Personally, I’ve had startling conversations with “attorneys” “police union representatives” and “call centers” from my phone service providers.

Phone scam threatens area residents

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning area residents about a phone scam in which the callers tell their victims that there is a warrant out for their arrest, and if the victims hang up or don’t pay a certain amount of money, then officers will be at their door to arrest them. Detective Melissa Phillips said she started receiving complaints about the scam on Thursday, July 27.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Recovery with Crochet, a meeting for people in recovery, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Life360 Resource Center located at 801 N. Lincoln Ave. in Monett. This meeting is for people ages 18 and up and will be a different approach to a mid-day (less formal) meeting to crochet and discuss topics of life and recovery.
