Monett man wanted on 12 felonies

A Monett 18-year-old is being sought for 12 felony charges and two misdemeanors spread across three cases in Barry County and two in Lawrence County. Cases against Andrew Madewell, 18, of Monett, began in March, when he was charged in Barry County with firstdegree tampering with a motor vehicle, stealing a firearm and resisting arrest.

Operation Game Thief works

Operation Game Thief, a non-profit program established by the Missouri Department of Conservation in 1983, has proven to be an effective tool in the department’s arsenal to curb poaching and other abuses of fish, forest and wildlife resources. “OGT has been a very effective program for citizens to report abuses of wildlife resources,” said Randy Doman, protection branch chief.

Think before you burn

Fire crept into a wooded area at 410 Golubski in Pierce City at about noon on Friday when a homeowner started burning waste. As dry vegetation and a brisk breeze fed the flames, the Monett Fire Department arrived with a brush truck to combat the blaze as it continued to move into the deeply wooded area. The Pierce City Fire Protection District soon arrived to assist. Pierce City Police Chief Mike Abramovitz firmly cautioned the homeowner not to burn at these drought conditions as fires can quickly escalate and cause a significant amount of property damage. The Pierce City Fire Protection District has also posted advisories on its Facebook page that burning is not recommended at this time.

City honored by Spire

Spire has presented the Silver Shovel Award to the city of Monett’s public works department. It honors the department for practicing safe digging. The city is a three-time winner of the award (2019, 2022, 2021). Each year, Spire recognizes municipalities who put safety first when digging. To be awarded, the municipality must: be located within Spire’s service territory, be a member in good standing with their state’s One Call system, and have had no at-fault damages to Spire’s facilities during the previous year (2021). Monett Professional Firefighters 2001 will be on the parking lot of First State Bank of Purdy in Monett collecting donations to Fight for a Cure from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each Friday throughout the month of October. Food truck vendors will be on hand to sell concessions. 2022 Fight for a Cure T-shirts will be offered at a cost of $20. The shirts will also be available at the fire station through Oct. 31. The Cox Monett Auxiliary Casserole and Cobbler luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 at the First United Methodist Church, 1600 N. Central in Monett. Attendees will have an opportunity to taste more than 40 homemade casseroles and cobblers. Admission to the luncheon is $10 per person. Tickets can be purchased from a volunteer in the hospital’s gift shop or at the door on the day of the event. Proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing hospital equipment and scholarships for local students pursuing careers in health care.
