Ribbon cutting for museum exhibits
Surrounded by students from Monett High School’s Missouri Literature and Composition classes, GO CAPS Education Strand and Southwest Regional Technical Center (SRTC), as well as other members of the community, Claudia Arit Ortiz-Medrano prepares to cut the ribbon at a ceremony dedicating 17 new museum exhibits on Thursday, May 16. The new exhibits were written by the students in the Missouri Literature and Composition classes, taught by Amy Sampson, and were designed by Tom Ireland, Lauren Blackburn and Marolyn Swanson, and the SRTC Construction class built them. Members of the Monett Historical Society helped to edit the exhibits. The exhibits detail Monett’s founding, the Frisco railroad, the schools, notable community members and Monett’s immigration story. They are written in English and Spanish; Ortiz-Medrando provided the Spanish translation for the exhibits. Funding for the project came from grants underwritten by Sampson, including: The Missouri Retired Teachers Foundation Grant, the Community Foundation of the Ozarks Inclusion and Belonging Grant, the IREX/Fullbright Global Teachers Grant and the 100+Women of Barry/Lawrence Counties Grant.
