Youth hoops camp coming up

To build a successful prep athletics program, an underrated key is to start teaching skills young. Josh Kleine, Monett girls basketball coach, knows this, which is why the annual K-6 girls basketball camp is set for June 14, 15 and 17, from 3:30- 5:30 each day, at the Monett Middle School gym.

Carrasquillo to Columbia

There’s not much Verona graduate Jaiden Carrasquillo did not accomplish this year. The valedictorian of his class, Carrasquillo has amassed $750,000 in scholarships toward his premed goals, and after much deliberation, has signed to play basketball at Columbia College in Columbia.

Athletes reel in honors

Spring sports in 2022 are in the books, and the postseason honor rolls are being unfurled. Local baseball, softball and soccer players have been recognized by their schools’ respective conferences and districts, and Pierce City’s teams were the most recognized.

Poynter takes 7th at Class 4 state meet

MONETT TRACK What: Class 4 State Championship Who: Konner Poynter and Vayla Smith Results: Poynter medals in 400-meter Two Monett athletes competed in the Class 4 State Championship Friday and Saturday, with one bringing home a medal. Junior Konner Poynter took seventh place in the 400-meter dash, running the race in 51.51 in the finals after a 50.83 in the prelims.

Jason Smith, Monett tennis coach, said over the course of the season, the team played more and more consistently, and smarter.
