A large crowd gathered in Freistatt on March 28, 1954, for groundbreaking of the new $200,000 Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. W.J. Stelling, seen at center, pastor for the past five years, was in charge of the event and turned the first shovel-full of dirt. Construction was expected to take one year.
