John Howerton: Veterans Threet, Ballay deserve honor for service

Saturday, November 13, 2021

Dear Editor:

My name is John Howerton and I am a graduate of Monett High school, Class of 1966. I am also a Vietnam veteran of 1967-1968.

I want to honor another Monett graduate of 1966. Howard Andrew Threet was born on Feb. 22, 1948, and enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after graduation. He was a Corporal with the 101st Airborne, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry, A Company.

Howard began his tour in Vietnam on March 24, 1968, and died on May 6, 1968, due to hostile action in the province of Thau Thien, South Vietnam.

Another Monett graduate of 1967 was James Vincent Ballay. James was born on Jan. 4, 1949. He was a Sergeant with the 101st Airborne, 3rd Battalion, 506th Infantry, A Company. James was killed in action on May 12, 1970, in Cambodia.

These two Monett High School graduates need recognition and honor for their ultimate sacrifice.

John Howerton
