Marionville man murdered
Suspect Jamie Godfey apprehended
A Marionville man is dead and another in jail following an incident that occurred Sept. 14.
In the statement of probable cause, Cpl. M. Fowler, with the Aurora Police Department, reported he responded to a call to 406 S. Central Street in Marionville, where Jeffrey Downs, who resided at the home, alleged his roommate, 50-year-old Jess Davis, was dead and that Jamie [Lee] Godfrey had killed him.
As other officers arrived, Fowler discovered the body of Davis in the northeast bedroom, lying on his back in a large pool of blood. Fowler also observed a large laceration across the victim’s neck.
Further investigation revealed a black knife in the kitchen that had recently been cleaned. He noted blood around the kitchen sink and the knife was still wet.
Dispatch then advised receiving a phone call from Donald Miers, Godfrey’s brother-in-law, who resides at 407 S. College Street, Marionville. He stated Godfrey had just left his residence and allegedly told him he “just did something bad and they wouldn’t see him for a long time.”
Godfrey has been charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action. He is incarcerated at the Lawrence County Jail and denied bond.
A preliminary hearing has been set for 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 18, at the Lawrence County Justice Center 240 North Main, Ste. 110, in Mount Vernon.
