Freistatt Fire expanding
Volunteers building addition to fire house
Freistatt firefighters are working on an expansion of their fire house that will help house two additional pieces of equipment.
Fire Chief Art Mattlage said work on the expansion began March 26 and will likely continue through June.
“We’re doing all the labor ourselves,” Mattlage said. “There are about 12 people helping, pretty well all volunteer [firefighters] with a couple retired guys.”
The department is building a 30-foot by 40-foot addition.
Mattlage said the new space will house one truck that does not currently have a bay in the fire house, and provide an additional space for growth, should the department decide to purchase a new truck.
The department is funding the expansion through its operating budget.
As a volunteer fire department, much of the Freistatt Fire Department’s budget comes from donations and fundraisers.
Mattlage said the Freistatt Volunteer Fire Department Association, which operates with a separate board of directors than the department itself, is responsible for fundraising for the department.
The association is also responsible for organizing the Freistatt tractor pull, held each September, as a fundraiser for the department.
