Dr. Ryan McDowell joins inpatient team

Cox Monett Hospital has announced the addition of Ryan McDowell, MD, to its inpatient team.

McDowell

McDowell received his bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in chemistry and Spanish from Missouri State University. He attended medical school at St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Family Practice at the CoxHealth Family Medicine Residency program in Springfield, where he served as chief resident, supervising junior residents and medical students.

McDowell says he chose medicine because it is mentally stimulating and because he feels doctors have a very unique and special opportunity to address a patient's health concerns and crises. He also believes in addressing the patient's deeper spiritual needs.

"For me, the attraction to rural medicine is getting to spend a little more time with the patient, which ends up being better quality of care and a stronger personal connection," said McDowell. "I grew up in Fair Grove, so I know that folks in smaller towns are very interesting, friendly and down to earth."

McDowell has made numerous trips to Oaxaca, Mexico, serving as a student volunteer, then later as a volunteer physician. While there, he ran several medical clinics in the indigenous villages located in the mountains, most of which are accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicles.

"My trips to Mexico have all been very enriching experiences and I found a lot of ways to be of service," said Dr. McDowell. "I have met some amazing people, seen beautiful mountains, and learned more about its fascinating cultures; I hope to return soon."

McDowell is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and is board-certified in Family Medicine.

When not working, Dr. McDowell enjoys tropical medicine and volunteering in underserved populations, hiking, camping, canoeing, and spending time with his family.
