Monett still searching for elusive win

The Monett Lady Cubs basketball team fell 54-19 to Joplin on Dec. 3

The Lady Cubs (0-5) fell behind 14-2 after one quarter of play and trailed 35-8 at halftime.

The Lady Eagles (1-1) forced 17 Monett turnovers in the game, and led 47-18 after three quarters.

Bailey Taylor led Joplin in scoring with 17 points. Danielle Hollingshed added 13.

Monett was led in scoring by Faith Schmidt, Brooke McLean and Jessica Harper with 4 points each. Haylee Morris added 3 points, and Cheryl Barnes and Kailee Ticknor finished with 2 points apiece.

Carl Junction Tournament

The Lady Cubs fell 49-32 to conclude play in the Carl Junction Tournament on Dec. 1.

"I thought we played a good game today," said Monett coach Kelly George. "We got in some foul trouble early and they made their free throws."

Monett trailed 6-2 after the first period. A 22-9 Lady Bulldogs' push in the second period sent Liberal into halftime with a 28-11 edge.

Monett regrouped at halftime and outscored Liberal 12-10 in the third but couldn't close the gap in the fourth period.

Brooke McLean led Monett in scoring with 14 points. Schmidt added 11 points. Morris recorded 6 points, and Barnes finished with 1 point.

Carl Junction

Monett fell 52-13 to Carl Junction to open play in the Carl Junction Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs pounced early and outscored Monett 20-4 in the first period. The Lady Bulldogs took a 26-6 lead into halftime.

"We did a better job of rebounding against Carl Junction," said George. "I was pleased with our hard work and defense."

Scoring for Monett: Barnes, 6 points; Morris, 4; and Harper, Schmidt and McLean, one point each.

Monett will host Cassville on Dec. 6. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
