* Construction will soon begin on the long-awaited hydro-electric dam on the Osage River near the village of Bagnell.

* Dr. and Mrs. W.C. Templeton of Dodge City, Kansas, spent Thursday in Monett visiting Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Davis.


August 3, 1939

* An organization of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic was effected at Monett on Wednesday with Mrs. C.W. Van Nordstrand elected the first president of the Monett group.

* Mrs. Ed Howard and daughter, Barbara, will return to their home in Paris, Texas, on Sunday after visiting in Monett for three weeks with relatives and friends.


August 3, 1949

* Monett American Legion members spent most of their time last night getting set for the coming year under its new commander, Henry "Swede" Olson.

* L.E. Lines and Jack Davis of Monett left Monday for a vacation trip to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons.


August 3, 1969

* Thirty-second annual meeting of the Ozark Electric Cooperative was held yesterday in the Mt. Vernon High School Auditorium.

* John "Jack" Spohn has been appointed superintendent of the Vaisey-Bristol Shoe Company plant in Marionville.


August 3, 1979

* Negotiations for a new contract between the City of Monett and Empire District Electric Company in Joplin are continuing with the contract under which the city has operated the past 10 years expiring yesterday.

* Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton will be the guest speaker at the annual membership meeting of Ozark Electric Cooperative in Mt. Vernon on Saturday.

* Two Monettans, Monett Elementary Principal Roberta Osterloh and EFCO Corporation founder Terry Fuldner, were recognized as among Missouri's Best in ceremonies yesterday.

* Scott Sullivan has been promoted to the position of field supervisor of the Barry-Lawrence Ambulance District.

* Monett area voters rejected a proposed property tax to support the Monett Special Road District yesterday by a wide margin.

* Patty Laney, who resigned as elementary principal at Purdy last month, was re-employed last night by the Purdy R-2 Board of Education.


August 4, 1939

* Herbert Hunt, manager of the Gillioz Clothing Company in Monett, will take a week's vacation with her family, starting Saturday.

* Mr. and Mrs. O.A. Manes and son, Darrell, of Monett, left this week for Los Angeles, California, to visit relatives.


August 4, 1949

* Oren Davis was employed by the Monett City Council on Wednesday to fill the vacancy on the Monett Police Department.

* The Monett Water Department will have a new chlorinator installed this week to replace the obsolete equipment which was purchased and has been in operation since 1922.


August 4, 1959

* Two men were apprehended this morning near Mountainberg, Arkansas, about 44 hours after their escape from the Barry County Jail in Cassville.

* Mr. and Mrs. Bob Roberts of Monett returned yesterday from Kansas City where they attended the Western Auto Merchandise Show.


August 4, 1969

* Oral Sims, retired chief warrant officer in the U.S. Air Force, has been employed as a patrolman with the Monett Police Department.

* The annual field day has been scheduled for September 12 at the University of Missouri's Southwest Center near Mt. Vernon, according to Elmer Kiehl, dean of the UMC College of Agriculture.


August 4, 1979

* Reports on the Monett Jaycee Carnival and the North Park concession stand highlighted last night's meeting of the Monett Jaycees. Wayne Self, president, presided.

* Mrs. Norman Arnold of Goodman was the installing officer last night at the installation of officers for Hobbs-Anderson Post 91 Monett American Legion Auxiliary.


August 4, 1989

* Kyndall Van Eaton, a junior this fall at Monett High School, participated this summer at the Missouri High School Art Institute in Springfield.

* Darrel Griffith, driving a 1941 Chevy two-door sedan owned by Helen Witt of Monett, took first place in the Antique Car Division at the Ponce de Leon annual picnic.


August 4, 1999

* A certificate of appreciation was extended by Hobbs-Anderson Post 91 Monett American Legion to members of the Fourth of July Committee for their efforts in organizing the Independence Day celebration in Monett.

* Stotts City Fire Department will hold an ice cream social and bucket brigade Saturday on Mt. Vernon Street.
