Monett crowns 2 conference champs

Jastal, Hinojosa Martinez shine at Big 8 Tournament

On their home mats on Wednesday, two Monett girls wrestlers grappled their way to their first taste of Big 8 hardware.

Freshman Mary Jastal, wrestling at 100 pounds, and sophomore Emily Hinojosa Martinez, at 159 pounds, both took home golds this week, with teammates Ashley Montelongo and Jazmin Garrett earning silvers. Brooke Bluel and Rylee Poole won bronze medals, and Brittany Hickerson and Jenna Spencer settled for fifth-place finishes.

In the 8-team event, not including three schools’ junior varsity participants, the Lady Cubs took fifth place with 102 points. Marshfield won the event 197 points, Cassville was second with 162, Nevada third with 122 and Seneca fourth with 106.

Jastal and Hinojosa Martinez each had just two other competitors in their brackets. Jastal won her opening match over Marshfield’s Briana Dockery, getting a nearfall and takedown before pinning her opponent in 1:28. In her second match against Nevada’s Averi Dawn, Jastal scored takedowns in the first and second rounds before mustering a pin at 1:42.

Hinojosa Martinez’s three-woman bracket was a little more muddy. The Monett grappler defeated Reeds Spring’s Alexis Harris by pin in 48 seconds. In her second match, she was leading Marshfield’s Trinity Lesser 5-4, but a misstep put her on a back and she was pinned in 1:48. In the final matchup between Lesser and Harris, the Lady Wolf picked up the win by pin in 1:30, making the round robin even at 1-1 apiece, and all by pin. Hinojosa Martinez was awarded first place because her pin time was the fastest of the three.

Montelongo, at 105 pounds, had a larger bracket, facing four total wrestlers. She won her first three matches by fall, but she met a tough customer in the de facto championship, Marshfield’s Josselyn Yates. She fell behind 3-0 and was pinned at 5:07 to take the silver.

Garrett, at 120 pounds, had a similar path with three opponents. She pinned her first two, both from Logan-Rogersville, in 3:25 and 1:02. This set her up for another de facto championship, facing Cassville’s Kailey Artherton, a 2021 state qualifier. The Lady Wildcat scored a takedown and finished the match with a pin at 46 seconds.
