Verona takes time to thank 2019-2020 athletes

More than 100 families brought chairs and sprawled out on the parking lot at Verona High School for the annual sports award banquet.

Normally, the event is held in the cafeteria, but county social distancing guidelines due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) forced the coaches and athletic director to get creative with their approach.

Verona Athletic Director Brad Stewart said it was important for the district to provide an in-person event for its athletes. Stewart noted that the youth had much taken away from them, and this was an evening where the district to give something back.

Stewart gave a brief “State of Verona Sports” address and thanked the voters for their support. He said because of the voters, the district is building a new gym and would have the best building and fields available.

“I can’t thank of another school our size that has newer or nicer facilities,” Stewart said. “It is something that we can all take pride in.”

Verona also welcomes a donation of more than $2,000 from Walmart that will go toward its weightlifting room.
