St. Stephenís to mark 125th anniversary
Monett church slates celebration for Oct. 6
On Sunday, Oct. 6, the members at St. Stephenís Episcopal Church in Monett will celebrate 125 years of the first Episcopal worship service in Monett.
"Our history shows several special dates but as St. Johnís Mission. later called St. Stephenís Church," said Linda Schelin, a member since 1979. "The first Episcopal service was organized by layman, A.R. VanGiesen. The name was changed in 1897. Bishop Edward Robert Atwill was the West Missouri Diocesan Bishop from 1890-1911."
The present Monett church, at 601 E. Benton, was dedicated in 1899.
"Our current Bishop is the Rt. Rev. Martin Field, pastor and administrator of 48 Episcopal churches from the Iowa border to the Arkansas border and from the Kansas border to the Mississippi River, approximately," Schelin said. "All Saints Church, in West Plains, is in our diocese. The rest of Missouri is a part of the Diocese of Missouri, with a different bishop presiding."
The celebration will be held at 11 a.m. and will include the Holy Communion service from the 1892 Book of Common Prayer.
