Historical Society hears tales of MIDC

Saturday, August 31, 2019
Longtime Monett banker, community leader and philanthropist Dayton Mackey, center left, spoke at the Monett Historical Society’s August meeting about his work on behalf of the Monett Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in convincing businesses to relocate to Monett. Speaking with Jerry Dierker, MIDC present, rear center right, Mackey talked about showing off the town to representatives of unknown companies, one time in a snowstorm. Mackey recounted the unexpected opposition from the public to developing the airport, and deals, like one business agreeing to make a donation to the Monett Special Road District to fund road improvements, making it possible for another firm to move. MIDC board members Mike Garrett and Rex Kay praised Mackey’s decades of dedicated work from the MIDC’s beginning in 1958. Murray Bishoff/times-news@monett-times.com
