The night culminated with the presentation of a new award. Since cadets chose the Spartan as their mascot for the program this year, Lt. Col. Cook and Sgt. Major Spencer developed the King Leonidas Award to reward the top graduating senior for service to the program.

Cadet Lt. Col. Jeffrey Kuhnert from Monett High School received the award, a wooden replica of the Spartan Rudis sword engraved with the name of the award and recipient.

Kuhnert has been a part of the Army JROTC program for the past four years and has participated in 136 separate JROTC events over that period. He began the program as a cadet private and finished as the cadet battalion commander, the highest position for a student in the program. Kuhnert has already enlisted in the U.S. Army and will begin his training this summer after graduation.
