Cubs among state’s brightest academically

The awards continue to roll in for the state champion Monett wrestling team.

After thrashing the Class 2 field for its second team title this season, the Cubs demonstrated the classroom discipline required to have six team members named on the rolls of the Missouri Wrestling Association Academic All-State team.

Matthew Bahl, Joey Semerad, Gunnar Bradley, Ethan Umfleet, Wesley Merriman and Harrison Merriman were all included on the prestigious list.

In order to qualify a wrestler must satisfy two criteria:

• They must have an accumulative GPA from the previous semester of 3.5 or higher.

• They must place in the top 6 in their respective weight class at the state tournament.

Semerad and Bradley are both three-time academic award recipients. Bahl has earned the distinction twice.

Umfleet and the Merriman brothers are first time award winners.
