Late free throw seals Verona win

Verona’s Austin Valdez hit a free throw with 0.8 seconds left to lift the Wildcats to a 56-55 victory over New Covenant Academy on Friday.

Valdez’s shot came after a foul on a layup attempt following a steal by the Wildcats with 4 seconds remaining.

After making the first, Valdez intentionally missed the second, forcing a desperation heave that hit the ceiling.

Leaders for the Wildcats were Caleb Hillhouse with 23 points and 9 rebounds.

Kolton Pinkly had 10 points. Jaiden Carrasquillo put up 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Anthony Martinez had 6 points and 4 assists. Eddie Gutierrez scored 6 points, and Valdez added 2.

The Wildcats, despite being outsized by 4-6 inches per player, were able to win the rebound battle, 37-34.

Verona improved to 17-4 on the season.

The Wildcats host Hartville on Thursday and Exeter on Friday.
