Mt. Vernon man dies in big rig wreck
Head-on collision kills man on Hwy. 174
A Mt. Vernon man died Friday morning in a wreck at 3 a.m. on Highway 174, four miles east of Mt. Vernon.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Bruce Berg, 23, of Mt. Vernon, was driving a a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer eastbound when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck head-on a 2014 Kenworth, being driven by Robert Rees, 52, of Aurora.
Berg was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m. by Dr. Jason Brocker at Mercy Hospital. Rees was not injured.
Rees was wearing a safety device, and Berg was not. The Blazer was totaled, and the Kenworth sustained moderate damage.
This is the 124th fatality for Troop D of the Patrol, which covers 18 counties in southwest Missouri, including Lawrence and Barry.
