Churches to send joy to children overseas

New Site Baptist Church, in Monett, and First Baptist Church, in Cassville, are not waiting until Thanksgiving Day to express gratitude.

Instead, they are giving back by lovingly packing gifts of joy for children around the world living in extreme poverty or affected by war, disease, and natural disaster. Operation Christmas Child— a project of Samaritan’s Purse — is the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind.

During National Collection Week, Nov. 12-19, area residents will donate shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, notes of encouragement and fun toys, such as a doll or soccer ball. This year, residents in the Ozark mountain area hope to contribute nearly 17,700 shoebox gifts toward the 2018 global goal of reaching 11 million children.

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world, and, together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 157 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories.
