Failure to comply with ban could mean charges

The Barry County Commission and city of Monett have issued burn bans, as drought conditions have elevated the risk of fire.

By order of the Barry County Commission, a county wide burn ban has been put in effect until further notice. This ban also includes the ignition of some types of fireworks and may carry a penalty of up to a class A misdemeanor.

Monett Fire Chief Tom Jones has announced that a burn ban has also been issued for the city Monett and advisories for surrounding communities.

Jones said he and chiefs from neighboring fire districts and departments decided a burn advisory should go into effect until further notice. Areas under advisory include rural Monett, Pierce City and Freistatt.

Dry conditions have created dangerous fire conditions for any kind of burning.

No outdoor burning will be allowed until further notice for anywhere in the areas where bans are active. This ban includes fireworks.

Firefighters ask all persons to be cautious of anything outdoors that may cause a spark or lead to a fire
