MVCT announces 2018 schedule of productions
Summer melodrama planned in June
Nearly halfway into the year, Mt. Vernon Community Theatre has announced its 2018 schedule of productions.
“It took us a while to narrow down our choices,” said David Kloppenborg, MVCT vice president. “But when it came together, we actually ended up with a plan for the next few years. It’s going to be really exciting.”
The 2018 season will start out on June 22-24 with a Readers Theatre production, "Larou’s Return, or How’s a Bayou?"
“Playwrights sometimes send us original play manuscripts, and Readers Theatre gives us a chance to try out new material and see how audiences react to it,” said Matt Teel, MVCT president. “The one we’re doing in June is a melodrama, and it’s really funny. The playwrights are excited to see us staging it and have offered us a lot of support.”
MVCT’s fall play this year will be a musical, "Nunsense," which will be performed the last two weekends of October.
“We usually do big musicals in the summer, but this year, we’re taking the opportunity to do a smaller musical,” said Kloppenborg. “And we’ll be taking it on the road, with performances in Mt. Vernon, Greenfield, Purdy, and other locations. We’ve really had a great time branching out to other communities, and since "Nunsense" doesn’t have a lot of set, it’s easy to travel with.”
In early December the traditional MVCT Christmas Show will be presented. Directors are talking about taking the show in a different direction this year, but still want as much community involvement as possible.
“We definitely want everyone to audition,” said Teel, one of the directors. “There’s so much talent in our region, and we love to showcase as much of it as we can.”
Audition dates will be published soon, and more information is available on the Mt. Vernon Community Theatre Facebook page, or by calling 417-366-9526.
