Relay for Life planned in Monett Friday
Fundraiser planned at middle school FEMA shelter
Final preparations are underway for the annual Barry County Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, which will be held from 6-10 p.m. on Friday at the Monett Middle School FEMA building, located at Ninth and Scott streets.
Teams will have booths and sell concessions. Eight teams have signed up to participate. The Central Park Elementary team is leading the fundraising effort with $1,098, followed by the Monett Elementary School MESsengers of Hope at $578. Other teams are Banking on Miracles, Team Positive Be Positive and Time Lords for a Cure.
Organizers have set a fundraising goal of $25,000. Luminaria are still available. Cancer survivors are encouraged to contact Helen or Emma Faye Ruscha at 417-489-0099.
Activities will be held in the FEMA cafeteria and on the lawn. Chairperson Sherry Hull said the city and the school district have given permission to close Ninth Street in front of the school to assist foot traffic around the event.
"We'll have vendors inside and out," Hull said. "The silent auction will be indoors. We will have more games this year, especially outside."
Cancer survivors will be saluted and a memorial service held for those lost in the battle at 9 p.m.
"We're trying new things this year," Hull said. "There will be lots of vendors. We're trying to reinvent the Relay from what you may have expected. Cancer touches so many people in Barry County. Relay for Life is a great way to help fight this terrible disease."
