Pierce City sixth graders take initiative

Friday, March 30, 2018
There is a saying, “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade,” and that is just what the sixth grade class at Pierce City MIddle School is trying to do. Three students, Addi Iman, Katie Johnson and Rylie O’Hara, queried Charity Rakoski, middle school principal, as to why they were not scheduled for a spring field trip. Rakoski advised the students there was no budget to allow for the activity. Rakoski told them to gather information and ideas to persuade members of the school board that their hard work all year long should be rewarded. The three are spearheading a fundraising campaign to pay for their own class field trip to Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, including bus and fuel costs, meal costs, admission to the zoo and two educational programs. They have already raised $362 of the $462 needed to pay for their own field trip and have sought out chaperones and volunteers to help bring their plan to fruition.
