Head-on collision kills Pierce City man

Car crosses center line, collides with International truck

A Pierce City man died after a two-vehicle collision at about 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday on Highway 37, three miles west of Pierce City.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Tim Cowell, 48, was killed when his 2010 Volkswagen car collided head-on with a 2002 International truck, driven west by Scotty Hatfield, 32, of Rocky Comfort. Cowell's eastbound car crossed the center line, the patrol report said.

Pierce City and Monett firefighters responded to the scene, as well as a Barry-Lawrence Ambulance. A METS ambulance in the vicinity also responded.

Crowell was declared dead at the scene by Coroner Scott Lakin. He was not wearing a safety belt. Hatfield, who was wearing a safety belt, received minor injuries.

Both vehicles were totaled.

The death was the ninth fatality in 2018 for the Highway Patrol's Troop D, which covers 18 counties in southwest Missouri, including Barry and Lawrence.

Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City is handling funeral arrangements.
