Lady Cubs on the verge of several qualifiers

An eighth-place finish in the 27-team Ozark swim meet on Saturday was confirmation enough for Monett swim coach Dan Janssen that his athletes are headed in the right direction as they make the final push to get state qualifiers.

“It was nice to get back in the pool racing after a long three-plus weeks of training,” Janssen said. “I was very happy to place eighth, as the competition at the meet is always incredibly tough. Of the eight kids I brought, six were involved in scoring points for the team, which is a great ratio. We were able to hang with some really big teams, [some with 20-plus members]. It comes down to quality, not quantity, at these big meets.”

Eureka won the meet with 414 points. Glendale was second with 327. Monett recorded 122 points.

Results from the meet are as follows:

• Maddy Lee: 15th, 200 IM

• Kelli Sangston: seventh, 50 Freestyle; fifth 100 Backstroke

• Sara Drewianka: 11th, 50 Freestyle; 12th 100 Freestyle

• Carly Jenkins: 15th, 100 Freestyle

• Faith Drewianka: 16th, 500 Freestyle

• Aspen Lynn: 13th, 100 Breaststroke

• 200 Medley Relay: fourth, Kelli Sangston, Aspen Lynn, Sara Drewianka, Carly Jenkins

• 200 Freestyle Relay: 10th, Carly Jenkins, Ashley Baton, Faith Drewianka, Sara Drewianka

• 400 Freestyle Relay: third, Kelli Sanston, Ashley Batson, Faith Drewianka, Carly Jenkins

Janssen said the best swims of the day were 200 Medley Relay, which dropped 2 seconds off the state time.

Kelli Sangston, in the 100 Backstroke, is only 0.2 seconds from state cut, and the 400 Free Free Relay team took third.
