85 units lined up for festival procession up Broadway

Preparations are complete for the Monett Chamber of Commerce's annual Christmas parade, slated for 11 a.m. on Saturday.

According to Jeff Meredith, executive director for the Chamber, 85 entries have been lined up for the procession, which will head west from Eighth Street to Central. Monett's state champion softball team will serve as grand marshals for the event.

With two bands signed up, Meredith was making phone calls this week to firm up the presence of other school bands that usually attend so that they could appear well spaced between the 10 floats and various marching units. Businesses are also welcome to have floats, and responding to that invitation, First State Bank has entered a float this year.

Judging of the bands will again be held from the grandstand at Fourth and Broadway. Meredith will serve as master of ceremonies. Awards for vehicles, floats and marching units will be given out prior to the parade. Band winners should collect their trophies from the Chamber office at 200 E. Broadway following the event.

Late entries are welcome but will not be judged. Participants are asked to check in with the Kiwanis Club, which is organizing the lineup, at Eighth and Broadway an hour before the parade starts.

Traffic on cross streets will be blocked by the street department Saturday morning. The Sixth Street parking lot will be reserved for handicapped parking.
