Mt. Vernon High School Class of 1967 holds reunion
34 gather to share memories, enjoy company, recall the departed
The Mt. Vernon High School Class of 1967 held its 50th class reunion at the Mt. Vernon Arts and Recreation Center (the MARC) on Saturday evening, Oct. 14, over the Apple Butter Makiní Days festival weekend.
Thirty-five classmates, and twenty-five guests, attended the event returning from as far away as California and Virginia. With only 72 graduates, every high school classmate, who even attended one year, was invited. Three teachers joined the festivities. Several spouses attended which included two of deceased classmates.
Of those classmates attending, 15 were from municipal and rural Mount Vernon, 13 from nearby towns, and seven from out of state.
On Friday evening, several gathered at the home of classmate Barbara (Ingle) Allen and her husband Bill. Saturday morning several classmates also enjoyed riding on a float in the ABMD parade and tossing candy to the parade watchers.
The class of 1967 had 26 of 39 in the class serve in the military. None were lost in combat, though several struggled with the aftermath of military service. Those gathered recalled the 17 classmates who have passed away: Glennis Ruckman, Mary (Boxx) Walker, Jay Hailey, Steve Wynne, Jim Bolin, Gene Roe, Gene Saffeels, Lois (Schnake) Baker, John Creed, Steve Walker, Margaret (Brown) Archibald, Ralph Carroll, John Huff, Darrell Stockton, Bonnie (Moore) Hillabrand, Janet (Brecht) Reynolds, and Ruth (Woodrum) Philips.
