Civil War battles remembered in Newtonia

The Newtonia Fall Festival traditionally focuses on the community’s heyday and its active role at the time of the Civil War, seeing two major battles occur on its streets. Several vendors were on hand sharing crafts of the period, including those of Native Americans, as Newtonia represented the first Civil War battles where Native Americas fought. This vendor came for the first time, bringing drums for sale. Cathy Lewis/Special for The Monett Times

Author Marie Jenkins Schwartz, who studied the lives of Missouri women in the 1800s, brought her research and photographic documentation of the lives of African Americans in plantation life to the Newtonia Fall Festival. She was one of several presenters set up at the Ritchey Mansion during the festivities on Saturday. Cathy Lewis/Special for The Monett Times
