Carole Heller: Resident thanks Bishoff for vigil on 1901 lynchings
Thank you to Murray Bishoff, citizen, humanitarian, journalist and writer, who held his annual vigil recently, remembering victims of the Pierce City race riot and lynchings on August 19, 1901.
Murray held a small crowd spellbound, telling of events surrounding the murder of a young woman and hour-by-hour actions of law enforcement and citizens, leading up to lynchings and accompanying racial violence.
Do yourself a favor — mark your calendar to attend Murray’s vigil next year, the year after, and the year after that. Murray is too modest to list the event in the paper, either before or after.
