Gun safety program presented at Monett Elementary

Saturday, June 17, 2017
For Summer School in Monett each year, School Resource Officer Jay Jastal presents a program on gun safety at Monett Elementary School. Jastal, left, showed a video and told of instances where a child found a purse with a loaded gun in it at South Park. An intermediate school student found a gun at home and took it to show friends. Explaining the difficulty in telling the difference between a toy and a real gun, Jastal had children recite a jingle from the video, directing children, if they find a gun, to “Stop, don’t touch, run away and tell a grown-up.” He ended the session with second and third graders in Nikki Ross’s class having the children repeat the mantra in their “outdoor voice.” Murray Bishoff/times-news@monett-times.com
