Performance draws former singers back to home turf

Purdy High School Alumna Sammye Davis Beck returned to her hometown stage to accompany the second annual Purdy Alumni and Community Choir as they performed on Saturday, March 18.

Beck, who graduated from PHS in 1964, received her bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Arkansas in 1968, and her Masters of Music degree from Pittsburg State University in 1971. She taught elementary music a half a year in Springdale, Arkansas. She then taught elementary music and orchestra and was coordinator of music in Joplin Schools for 30 years.

After her retirement in 1998, Becl served as Joplin High School piano accompanist for six years. She received the Lois Williamson Bellm “Friend of Music” award for 2006-2007.
