Lady Eagles roll Sarcoxie to advance

For the fourth time in the last five years, the Pierce City girls basketball team will vie for a district title.

The Lady Eagles advanced to the title game with a 57-37 win over Sarcoxie in the Class 2, District 12 semifinal on Wednesday.

Pierce City controlled the game from the opening tip, racing out to a 16-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“We got our confidence going [early],” said Rob Guerin, Pierce City coach. “Sometimes, we take a little bit to get going, but tonight, our defense set the tone and with our offense, every extra rebound, loose ball or stop we get just helps us roll.”

The Lady Bears fought back in the second period, closing the gap to 6 points. But, the Lady Eagles pushed back and led 29-17 at the break. The lead grew in the second half, and the Lady Bears never could close the gap.

“I could see that Sarcoxie was getting frustrated,” Guerin said. “They got in a little foul trouble, and that took them out of what they wanted to do. We were able to use our bench and just wore them down in the second half.”

Scoring for Pierce City: Belle Golubski, 20; Ragan Blinzler, 15; Kayla Portillo, 10; Christine Stellwagen, 6; Kendyl Hayward, 4; and Kristen Jones, 2.

Tipoff for the district title is set for 6 p.m.
