Purdy, Pierce City compete in playoff action

The basketball season is rapidly coming to a conclusion.

Beginning Monday, the Purdy and Pierce City boys and girls basketball teams will travel to Sarcoxie for district playoff action.

On the girls side, Purdy claimed the No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 Pierce City, No. 3 Sarcoxie, No. 4 McAuley, No. 5 College Heights, No. 6 Jasper, No. 7 Southwest and No. 8 Thomas Jefferson.

On the outside looking in, this appears to be a two-team bracket between the top two seeds. The Lady Eagle squads were only separated by five points during the regular season meeting with Purdy coming out on top.

However, Sarcoxie was able to hang with both teams during regular season play. Both teams were undefeated during the regular season against the other district opponents.

Girls action opens on Monday at 4 p.m. with a tipoff between Purdy and Thomas Jefferson, followed by McAuley and College Heights.

The winners of those games meet in the Wednesday semifinal at 6 p.m.

Pierce City and Southwest face off at 7 p.m. on Monday, and Sarcoxie and Jasper conclude the evening with a 8:30 bout.

Those winners play at 7:30 on Wednesday.

The championship is scheduled at 6 p.m. on Friday.

On the boys side, McAuley is the No. 1 seed, followed by Pierce City, No. 2; Purdy, No. 3; Southwest, No. 4; Sarcoxie, No. 5; Jasper, No. 6; College Heights, No. 7 and Thomas Jefferson, No. 8.

The boys division is wide open this season and anything is possible. A case can be made for any of the top three seeds to win the tourney.

During the season, Purdy beat McAuley, McAuley defeated Pierce City and Pierce City topped Purdy.

McAuley also defeated Purdy, but the game was played after the district tournament had been seeded.

McAuley and Thomas Jefferson open play on Tuesday at 4 p.m., followed by Southwest and Sarcoxie at 5:30 p.m.

The winners will meet in the semifinal round on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Pierce City will entertain College Heights at 7 p.m. on Monday, followed by Purdy and Jasper in the 8:30 night cap.

Those winners play in the second semifinal on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The championship is set for 8 p.m. on Friday.
