Signups underway for Oct. 24 event

The fifth annual Doug Weatherly Memorial Scholarship 5K Fun Run is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, starting at the Pierce City High School track.

This year's event, Coloration Pierce City Nation 2015, will feature new adult and youth obstacle courses.

Registration is $20 before Friday, Oct. 9, and $25 after. Those registered before the Oct. 9 early deadline will receive a free T-shirt. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on the day of the race.

There is a family rate of $60 for a family of four, and $8 for each additional runner. The Pierce City student rate is $10. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Event organizers have requested no pets.

Doug Weatherly was a middle school teacher and coach at Pierce City for 22 years. He died unexpectedly in December 2010, while doing what he loved -- coaching. Pierce City was the only teaching and coaching position Weatherly ever held.

In his name and funded by the run, a scholarship was set up to assistant college-bound students. Additional funds are used to assist the school, students and families in Pierce City.

Prizes will be given for the top male and female runners.
