Monett celebrates homecoming with 41-6 win
Cubs' Paszek comes up big with interception, Hail Mary catch
The Monett football team celebrated homecoming in style with a 41-6 victory over Mt. Vernon on Friday.
Both teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first period, but the Cubs erupted for 27 points in the second quarter.
Ian Meyer opened the scoring with a 1-yard plunge with 9:43 left in the second. The score capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive.
Meyer then doubled the Cubs' lead with a 61-yard pitch and catch to senior Jonah Paszek with 7:03 left in the first half. On Monett's next drive, Michael Branch capped off a 6-play, 70-yard drive with a 3-yard score with 1:33 left in the half.
Mt. Vernon attempted to drive 72 yards in the final 90 seconds of the second quarter, but Paszek intercepted a Garrett Hadlock pass and returned it to the Cubs' 49 with 10 seconds left.
Instead of taking a knee, Meyer threw a Hail Mary pass toward the south end zone, and the ball fell into Paszek's arms for a 51-yard touchdown with two seconds left, sending Monett into the intermission with a 27-0 advantage.
Branch opened the scoring in the third period with a 14-yard run with 2:46 left in the third period. Monett's Cameron Witt completed the scoring with a 9-yard run with 9:00 left in the fourth quarter.
The Cubs improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in Big 8 Conference play. Mt. Vernon falls to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference standings.
Monett travels to Cassville for The Barry County Brawl on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
