Jeff Meredith: Chamber endorses city's transportation tax

Saturday, July 11, 2015

Dear Editor:

Whether you walk, ride a bike, drive a car or fly; transportation is an important part of everyone's day. In Monett, we are blessed to have a forward-thinking city council and other community leaders who help identify tomorrow's issues today.

I have sat through several meetings as the city and its partners walked through the current transportation needs and determined how to best prepare for the future. Through the input of many people smarter and more invested in the community than I (and I'm more involved than most), there is now a list of goals to help move Monett forward.

During the June meeting of your Monett Chamber's Board of Directors, we voted to come out in support of the transportation sales tax on the Aug. 4 ballot. With one sales tax set to expire, the net increase will only be a quarter of a percent. But through this minimal increase, we will be able to have new sidewalks, safer and improved intersections and better transportation for all who live, work, shop and play here.

If you would like to see the plan, it's available on the city's website. If you have questions, you can contact Dennis Pyle. He's more than willing to talk with you or come present to your group.

What I'm asking is for you to exercise your freedom to vote on Aug. 4, and I'd encourage you to vote "yes," as we move Monett forward together.

Jeff Meredith

Executive director

Monett Chamber of Commerce

  • No surprise here.....
