Pierce City travels over 600 miles to collect wins

The trip of a lifetime resulted in a pair of victories for Pierce City High School's basketball teams.

The two basketball squads wrapped up a doubleheader with Liberal on Jan. 24.

Then the Eagles and Lady Eagles boarded a bus at 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 25, traveled 331 miles to play Sarcoxie at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn.

Pierce City's boys earned a 43-36 victory over the Bears and the girls cruised to a 42-13 win.

"We had a great time in Memphis," said Pierce City Eagles coach Matt Street. "The kids did a great job of focusing up after halftime. We did a nice job on the defensive end of the floor to help overcome our offensive struggles."

Both squads were tied 10-10 at the end of one quarter of play. The Bears outscored the Eagles 11-8 in the second period to take a 21-18 edge into halftime.

Pierce City's defense tightened up in the third period to hold the purple and gold to 4 points while the green and white totaled 10 points.

Pierce City carried the fourth quarter 15-11.

Scoring for Sarcoxie: Garrett Triplett, 15 points; Justin Meyers, 12; Austin Lynch, 3; and Ryder Cox, Tucker Mettlach and Riley Anderson.

The Lady Eagles improved to 14-7 with a convincing 42-13 victory over the Lady Bears.

The green and white won every quarter.

"We started out a little sluggish from the long bus ride but were able to get things going in the second quarter," said Peirce City coach Rob Guerin. "The team had a great time and it was a great team bonding experience."

Pierce City held a 6-3 after the first eight minutes but used a 21-0 surge in the second period to lead 27-3 at intermission.

The Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Bears 9 to 7 in the third and 6 to 3 in the fourth periods.

Scoring for Pierce City: Krishna Merriman, 13 points; Bailee Hayward, 10; Christine Younker, 6; Mattie Brottlund and Amber Wagner, 4 each; Emily Ashley, 3; and Beca Hatfield, 2.

"Overall, it was a great trip and we had a really good time," said Street. "I would definitely be interested in doing it again in a couple of years."

Pierce City will host Lockwood in a conference doubleheader on Feb. 1. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
