Monett wrestling shines at Odessa meet

The Monett Cubs wrestling team claimed top honors at the Odessa Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 26.

The Cubs amassed 91 total points to secure first place. Fulton was second with 89 points, and Odessa finished third with 83 points.

"I am very excited about the next two weeks. The way that we competed this weekend is encouraging," said Monett coach Daryl Bradley. "Eight of the state's top 16 teams competed in the tournament and to wrestle as well as we did is very encouraging. I hope that we build off the momentum from the weekend and finish the season strong."

Monett claimed four first place finishes and three second place finishes.

"I was especially impressed with Devon (Overall), Chase (Brennan) and Shawn (Beeson)," said Bradley

Individual Results

* 106 pounds: Sean Jastal, fifth place.

* 113 pounds: Chase Brennan, first place.

"Chase totally dominated everyone, I feel that he is determined to be on top of the podium at the end of the season," said Bradley.

* 120 pounds: Kedric Brink, second place.

* 145 pounds: Dominick Witherow, fifth place.

* 170 pounds: Wesley Abramovitz, sixth place.

* 182 pounds: Matt Wentz, third place.

* 195 pounds: Devon Overall, first place.

"Devon is definitely in the hunt for a state title, he beat several ranked kids this weekend," said Bradley.

* Heavyweight: Shawn Beeson, second place.

"Shawn beat three ranked kids this weekend and keeps getting better and better every time he goes out on the mat," said Bradley.

* 126 pounds: Garret Bradley, first place.

* 132 pounds: Brice Watson, second place.

* 138 pounds: Jaron Howard, first place.

* 220 pounds: Jacob Negre, first place.

"Jaron (Howard), Garret (Bradley), Jacob (Negre) and Brice (Watson) competed hard and won three championships and a second place finish," added Bradley. "I am very proud of the team right now. I hope to continue this success. I feel that we are coming together as a team, and we are starting to believe that we can win a district title."
