The Barry County Soils and Crops Conference will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the community center in Butterfield. Gregg Bailey from Community National Bank will speak on agriculture lending. Livestock specialist Dona Goede will speak on timed artificial insemination. A panel will discuss pasture forage systems. The free meal begins at 6:15 p.m. followed by presentations. For more information, contact the Extension Office at 417-847-3161.

The Lawrence County Health Department will hold food service training workshops from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Feb., 1 and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 8, at the department office, 105 W, North St. in Mt. Vernon. Cost is $10 per participant. Call 417-466-2201 to enroll. Beginning Jan. 1, establishments will receive critical violations for any employee who does not have a food ID card.

Beginning Feb. 1, the Southwest Missouri Office on Aging will offer free assistance in completing state and federal tax forms for senior citizens age 60 or more. A session is planned at the Monett Senior Citizens Center.

A "sweetheart dance" is planned for 7 to 10 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, at the Monett Senior Center, 405 Dairy St. The Fun Timers Band will provide music. Participants are encouraged to bring potluck or finger food. Admission is $3.

This is the final week of National Radon Action Month. People are encouraged to check for naturally occurring, odorless radioactive gas that can accumulate in unventilated sections of homes. Information is available on the Internet at www.RadonMonth.org.

A reception for Tony Simmons, the new superintendent for the Verona R-7 School District, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the school cafeteria. Refreshments will be served. Simmons begins in the 2013-14 school year.

The Barry County Tax Board for the Developmentally Disabled will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28 at the Cassville Branch of the Barry-Lawrence Regional Library.

Renewal notices for members of the Pierce City Rural Fire Department have been mailed. Checks should be mailed by Jan. 31 to PCRFD, PO Box 134, Pierce City Mo. 65723. Cancellation notices will be sent on Feb. 10.

The Monett-Purdy Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity is now accepting applications for house #7. Interested persons may pick up applications from the Monett Chamber of Commerce, located at 200 E. Broadway, or from Ron Stair at the First Christian Church, located at 603 Fourth St. in Monett. For more information, call Vicky McGuire at 235-3333.

An "E-Reader Class" will be held at the Monett Branch Library, 213 Sixth St., at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31. This is an opportunity for those with E-Reader devices to learn helpful tips on using them. For more information, call the library at 417-235-6646.

A Valentine's Dinner is planned for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Pierce City Senior Center, Cost is $12 per person, payable when making reservations. The dinner includes stuffed pork loin. For more information, call 476-5006.

Preschool and kindergarten screenings will be held at Monett Elementary School on Feb. 5 and on March 5 and 12. The team will check motor skills, speech and language skills, concept development, vision and hearing. Screenings are free and take approximately one hour. Parents receive a summary of results.
