The program funds the Purdy R-2 School District Backpack Program for children in need.
The St. John's Lutheran Church Vision Leadership Program also elected to participate in a complementary two-to-one challenge grant program sponsored by the foundation. For every dollar raised by the program from donors by March 31, the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation will provide an additional 50 cents, up to $5,000, in support of the organization's backpack program ministry.
"Difficult economic conditions and high unemployment rates have caused many Americans to seek support for basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter from local nonprofits," said Kathy Larson, grants program manager for Thrivent. "This grant program is designed to help effective organizations maintain their financial stability in the face of increased demand on their resources."
"We are extremely grateful to the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation for selecting the St. John's Lutheran Church Vision Leadership Program to receive this grant and the matching opportunity," said Purdy R-2 School District Superintendent Steven Chancellor. "Many underprivileged school children in our district will benefit from their generosity."
"We would appreciate donations of any amount in an effort to seize the matching opportunity offered to us by Thrivent Financial," said Rebecca Webb, St. John's Lutheran Church Vision Leadership Program member and backpack program chairperson. "The Vision Leadership Program's goal is to raise $10,000 in order to receive the maximum amount of $5,000 in matching funds. It's exciting to imagine how much good we can do with $15,000."
Those interested in donating to the organization should make checks payable to the St. John's Lutheran Church Vision Leadership Backpack Fund and earmark them "Thrivent Matching."
A checking account is established at First State Bank. Donations must be received by March 31, 2013 to be included in the matching program.
