Fourth quarter woes cost Verona

The upset minded Verona Lady Wildcats basketball team stumbled in the final eight minutes and fell 47-38 to Cassville on Jan. 22.

Verona (8-10) trailed 15-9 at halftime, but came out of the locker room on fire.

A 3-pointer by Tessa Bilyeu and a layup by Shelby Barsotti tightened the game quickly for the purple and gold just 45 seconds into the third quarter.

Leann Hesemann gave Verona a 21-20 lead with 3:35 left in the third stanza.

Both varsity squads traded baskets the remainder of the period with Verona taking a 29-28 lead into the fourth.

Cassville wasted no time in re-establishing a lead.

A quick steal led to an Emily Speakman layup to open the final frame. Speakman led all scorers with 27 points.

Cassville scored on their next four trips down the floor to open a 37-31 cushion.

Verona struggled to hit shots while Cassville made their free throws to secure the 47-38 win.

Scoring for Cassville: Speakman, 27 points; Kelsey Baker, 9; Brittani Long, Sydney Curnes and Lindsay Nolan, 3 each; and Katelyn Pitts, 2.

Scoring for Verona: Barsotti, 14; Hessemann, 9; Bilyeu, 5; Taylor Pinkly and Hannah Hilton, 4 each; Torri Pinkly, 2.
