The Ozark Festival Orchestra held auditions on Jan. 12 for the 14th annual Young Artists competition. Five young people tried out for the chance to play a concerto movement with the orchestra on April 7 at the Monett City Hall Auditorium. Playing for a panel of judges, from left, were: Jacob Furry, 14, of Monett, a piano student of Dixie Breon; Grace Hurd, 15, of Springfield, a piano student of Melissa Duncan; Haley Schweighardt, 14, of Willard, a horn student of Chris Church; Micaela Murphy, 16, of Webb City, a viola student of Jackie Lee; and Mariah Murphy, 14, of Webb City, a violin student of Chin-fei Lin. Mariah Murphy was selected as the junior division winner and will play the slow movement from the Violin Concerto #2 by Henryk Wieniawski. Michaela Murphy was chosen as the senior division winner and will play the opening movement from a violin concerto by Handel arranged for viola. The Barry-Lawrence Area United Fund, expanding opportunities for young people, underwrites the Young Artists concert.
