The Monett Lady Cubs basketball team kept the game close for a half but couldn't get past Aurora and fell 35-16 on Jan. 10.

"We played well the first half but turnovers and shot selection hurt us in the second half," said Monett coach Kelly George.

Monett went five for 32 from the field and hit six of 15 attempts from the free throw line.

Monett held a 7-5 edge over the Lady Houn' Dawgs after one period.

Aurora rallied to out-pace the Lady Cubs 11-3 in the second quarter to lead 16-10 at the intermission.

Turnovers sank the Monett's rally chances in the second half. The Lady Cubs committed 26 turnovers during the contest.

Aurora outscored Monett 14-6 in the third period and held the young purple and gold squad scoreless in the final frame.

Scoring for Monett: Brooke McLean, 6 points; Kelsey Wiseman, 5; Lakin English and Haylee Morris, 2 each and Kendall Bounous, 1.

Monett opens play in the Marionville Tournament tonight against the host Lady Comets. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
