A brainstorming session will be held on January 7 at 7 p.m. in the Historic Courthouse in Mt. Vernon to discuss cattle thefts in Lawrence County. Sheriff Brad DeLay, Prosecutor Don Trotter, stockyard owners, University Extension and the County Commission will be in attendance.

The Pleasant Ridge Road District commissioners will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church to open bids. For information, call 236-4690.

The Barry-Lawrence Regional Library branches will be closed on Jan. 1, 2013 in observance of New Year's Day.

Community Blood Center of the Ozarks will hold blood drives from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at St. Mary's Catholic School in Pierce City, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the First Christian Church, located at 703 S. Hickory in Mt. Vernon.

Hobbs-Anderson American Legion Post #91 has rescheduled its meeting for Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 to 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 2.

The Platters will appear for a New Year's eve concert at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 at the community building on the Crowder College campus in Cassville. Tickets are available at the Rise and Shine and the Soda Fountain in Cassville and at the Red Barn in Mt. Vernon.

The Pierce City Senior Citizens Center, located at 104 Locust St., opens at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays. Hot lunch is served at noon. Cost is $4.50 for those under 55 or $3.50 for those over 55. Carry-outs are available and can be ordered before 11 a.m. by calling 476-5006. Line dancing is offered at 9:30 a.m. and arthritis exercise at 10:30 a.m.

Positions are currently open at the information desk and gift shop, and on-the-job training is provided. Volunteers must be a least 15 years old.
