Monett R-1 School Superintendent Brad Hanson offered the following comments on school security in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
"We conduct intruder drills at all campuses periodically throughout each year," Hanson said. "These drills are designed to prepare staff for situations similar to the tragedy that occurred today in Connecticut. We also take time to reflect on our practices for all of our safety drills each and every year to make sure that our practices continue to provide the best safety environment for each of our students.
"In addition to these drills, Monett R-1 continues to keep student safety at the forefront when looking at building projects and other facility improvements. Our most recent building project, the recently completed Monett Elementary School, has state-of-the-art security features at the main entrance of the campus that directs all visitors through the main office.
"In addition to this feature, every other entrance on the new campus has additional security features that are designed to keep intruders from entering the building. Similar types of security features are being planned for each of our other campuses in the future.
Hanson concluded, "We, the Monett R-1 teachers, staff and administration, consider the safety and welfare of each of our students a primary concern on a daily basis."
