The Verona Lady Wildcats basketball team (2-1) took third place in the Diamond Tournament with a 38-37 victory over Sarcoxie on Dec. 1.
"We ended the tournament on a positive note winning the last two games," said Verona coach Ryan Yates. "The girls continued their good effort and teamwork."
The Lady Wildcats led Sarcoxie 10-7 after the first period, only to see the Lady Bears outscore the purple and gold 11-4 in the second period.
Verona stepped up the defensive intensity in the third period and outpaced the Lady Bears 11-3 to lead 25-21 to start the fourth quarter.
Torri Pinkly and Jessica Youngberg led Verona in scoring with 9 points each. Shelby Barsotti and Leann Hesemann chipped in 6 points apiece and Tessa Bilyeu and Taylor Pinkly recorded 4 points each.
The Lady Wildcats won their second round matchup in the Diamond Tournament with a 42-37 victory over College Heights on Nov. 30.
After each team scored 7 points in the first quarter, Verona grabbed an eight-point lead with a 12-4 second quarter performance to lead 19-11 at halftime, and held on to win.
Barsotti led Verona with 13 points.
Also scoring for the Lady Wildcats were: Hesemann, 11 points; Taylor Pinkly, 9; Youngberg, 7; and Tori Pinkly, 2.
"We made some adjustments," said Yates. "The girls played much harder and were less nervous during this game. They played as a team and were able to get the win."
Verona travels to Wheaton on Dec. 7 Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
