The Pierce City Lady Eagles basketball team (1-2) took fourth place in the Ash Grove Lady Pirate Invitational on Dec. 1.
The Lady Eagles fell 44-35 to East Newton in the consolation game.
East Newton jumped out to a quick 13-3 lead after one quarter and led 18-12 at halftime. Pierce City narrowed the gap, outscoring the Lady Patriots 11-0 in the third period, but couldn't draw any closer in the final eight minutes.
East Newton scoring: Haley Hellig, 10 points; Lindsey Broyles, 9; Kourtney Brewster and Emily Brummett, 6 each; Whitney Tomlinson and Kourtney Canthers, 5 apiece; and Shelby Tomlinson, 2.
Pierce City scoring: Krishna Merriman, 11 points, Shania Hogan, 9; Christine Younker, 8; Emily Ashley, 5; and Mattie Brottlund, 2.
The Lady Eagles earned a 53-45 victory over Lamar in the second round of the Ash Grove Tournament on Nov. 30.
Pierce City and Lamar were tied at 10-10 after one quarter of play and the Lady Tigers took a 23-20 lead at intermission.
Pierce City outpaced Lamar 16-10 in the third period and outscored the Lady Tigers 17-12 in the fourth period to earn the victory.
"I saw much improvement from our first in the tourney," said Pierce City coach Rob Guerin. "We are starting to play better together as a team."
The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Ashley with 17 points. Younker recorded 14 points. Merriman tallied 8 points. Shania Hogan recorded 7 points, Mattie Brottlund chipped in 3 points, and Amber Wagner and Emilee Sooter finished with 2 points each.
Pierce City hosts Lamar on Dec. 6. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
